On 16 August 1928 Bert Hassell, pilot, and Parker Cramer, mechanic, both of Swedish descent, started a trial flight from Rockford, Illinois, USA to Sweden. The flight was to go via Greenland and Iceland. Over Greenland the plane ran out of gasoline and they were forced to land. After a 13 day walk on foot they reached the coast. They were saved on 2 September, when the scientific expedition of Professor Hobbs found them. Upon arrival back at Rockford on 18 October, 10 letters which had been carried on the flight, were stamped. On each letter Bert Hassell, Parker Cramer and the Postmaster of Rockford, Arthur L. Johnson, have written their signatures. The aeroplane used for the flight was a Stinson Detroiter, which had been given the name “The Greater Rockford”.
