Notes
Alfred Lichtenstein was president of the Third International Philatelic Exhibition (TIPEX). The show ran from May 9 to 17, 1936, at New York’s Grand Central Palace. On May 10, Lichtenstein met zeppelin commander Dr. Hugo Eckener, who visited the exhibition and gave a talk the day after arriving on Hindenburg. Perhaps Eckener extended an invitation or suggested a zeppelin flight.
Alfred Lichtenstein (1876-1947) was a chemist and served as president of the Aniline Dyes & Chemicals, Inc., and later as president of CIBA Company, Inc. of New York, a CIBA subsidiary. Sometime between the end of the exhibition and July 10, Lichtenstein sailed to Europe, probably visited CIBA offices in Basel, Switzerland, and arrived in Frankfurt to fly home by Hindenburg on its fifth North America westbound flight (July 10-13, 1936).
Lichtenstein wrote this card aboard to S. Tanner Green, the Superintendent of the Quebec Postal Service, a cover servicer and collector, philatelic author, and Lichtenstein correspondent.
