LZ 129 Hindenburg

Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH of Friedrichshafen, Germany, built the 804-foot-long LZ129 Hindenburg, and Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei operated its 1936-37 flights domestically and transatlantically to the United States and Brazil. Hindenburg flew 63 flights between March 1936 and May 1937, offering the first regularly scheduled air service to North America for passengers, freight, and mail. On the evening of May 6, 1937, Hindenburg burst into flames and crashed at Lakehurst, New Jersey. The disaster destroyed the zeppelin in 34 seconds, ending the era of lighter-than-air commercial travel.
