Notes
The cover shown here was prepared by Newark, N.J. printer/stamp dealer A.C. Roessler, and contains an example of Roessler's illegal private "Graf Zeppelin" overprint of the green one-cent Fourth Bureau Franklin stamp. Roessler was later prosecuted by Federal Authorities for defacing U.S. stamps and received probation.
During the return flight to Friedrichshafen, a 17 year old American boy was discovered to have stowed away at Lakehurst. Dr. Eckener ordered that he be put to work in the ship's kitchen. The primary takeaway from the flight was that regular airship service to North America would likely require a larger ship due to challenging North Atlantic weather conditions. That idea ultimately came to fruition when Hindenburg established regular service to Lakehurst in the spring of 1936.
