Mail of U.S. Navy Observer and Passenger Lt. Cdr. Edward H. "Iceberg" Smith. Mailed from U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C. to Lt. Cdr. Smith at the American Embassy in Berlin. Hand carried by Smith on the Iceland Flight and posted on board on July 1, 1931. Later in July, Smith was again an official observer on the Polar Flight, where he re-posted the cover on July 27th. Signed by Dr. Eckener and polar explorers Lincoln Ellsworth and Rudolf Samoilovich, both of whom were passengers on the Polar Flight.
