The Third International Philatelic Exhibition (TIPEX) in the United States took place in New York City from May 9 to 17, 1936. Hindenburg arrived at Lakehurst, Commander Dr. Hugo Eckener visited the stamp show and spoke to collectors thanking them for mailing cards and letters by zeppelin. Attendees could post mail at the show to be flown on Hindenburg’s return flight and receive the show postmark. Some of this mail included franking with the TIPEX souvenir sheet or portions of it. May 9 was the first day of issue of the souvenir sheet. The Hindenburg rate was 40¢ to Europe, 3¢ additonal for airmail within the United States, and 3¢ additonal for airmail within Europe. Mail received the special purple flight cachet and one of the three Friedrichshafen receiving cancels. 842 kilograms of mail were aboard.
