Notes
Amazingly, some mail survived the Hindenburg disaster. Of the over 17,000 pieces of mail aboard, less than four hundred survived with a deliverable address. Some were burnt, others intact. The Paquebot marking at the New York City post office Morgan Annex was used for all salvaged mail found without a postmark. At least 167 uncanceled cards and envelopes were found unburnt on salvaged mail intended for the return flight 64 and preserved from burning by a protective storage box.
In addition, some uncanceled burnt crew mail was found in the recovered personal belongings of crew members. This Hindenburg crash mail was treated as inbound high seas ship mail with foreign postage by Morgan Street Annex clerks.
