Notes
Hindenburg’s first flight of 1937 tested the engines and radio transmissions. This envelope on Hindenburg stationery was addressed to crew member Chief Engineer Rudolf Sauter. This flight had 65 passengers, 55 crew members, and 12 members of the Zeppelin Company staff. 2 kilograms of mail carried. Canceled in flight over Germany with three blocks of four of the air protection (civil defense) stamps and the Frankfurt airport receiving cancel.
Collectors and dealers could prepare mail with German postage in advance and request the onboard postmark for a day during the flight. For some flights, these were canceled in advance at the Frankfurt 19 railway post office and then placed aboard. More difficult to find are onboard postmarks on mail posted aboard the zeppelin by passengers or crew members.
