Notes
On its first North America trip of 1937, Hindenburg burst into flames while landing at Lakehurst on a rainy evening. The disaster took 36 lives and destroyed most of the 17,000+ pieces of mail. Less than 400 pieces of mail survived. This example was family correspondence between brothers on a folded typewriter card at the 75 pf rate. Found in the second search of the smoldering wreckage, it was sent to Philadelphia and then New York City post offices for forwarding. Postal clerks documented and enclosed in a glassine envelope with two postal seals.
