Notes
Max Pruss was commander of Hindenburg's final flight with 61 crew members and 36 passengers. During landing, the zeppelin burst into flames and crashed to the ground, totally destroyed in 34 seconds. Nearly all of the 108 kg of mail (over 17,000 pieces) plus onboard mail burned in the disaster. Of the less than 400 pieces of mail to survive, only a handful were written aboard by passengers. This onboard 1937 postmark was in use for only three days for passengers and crew members during the transatlantic flight. Businessman Burtis “Bert” J. Dolan sent this picture postcard of Hindenburg’s smoking room, which he purchased aboard, to his neighbor. Dolan perished in the disaster. This card is 1 of 7 know salvaged examples of this postmark on mail written by a passenger and postmarked during flight.
