Notes
The LZ 126 was built to help meet reparations owed by Germany to the United States following World War I. The ship was formally designated ZR 3 by the U.S. Navy. (ZR = "Zeppelin Rigid") It was flown across the Atlantic Ocean and delivered to the Navy at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station in October 1924.
The ship was later christened USS Los Angeles and became the Navy's most successful rigid airship.
Construction of the ZR 3 was key to keeping the Zeppelin Company in business in the early to mid-1920s, when Hugo Eckener devised the Zeppelin-Eckener Fund to help finance the construction of the company's next ship: the LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin.
